Asymmetry makes it nearly impossible to achieve a symmetrical opening at the tip. If the sides are uneven, scraping the reed evenly from side to side becomes an uphill climb, directly compromising the evenness of the vibrations.
To prevent this, the center of your gouge must possess enough strength to balance the sides. - Matching Your Shaper Tip: The gouge must balance your chosen shaper. As a general rule, the narrower the shaper tip, the heavier the sides of the gouge need to be to maintain a healthy opening. Wider shaper tips naturally allow you to use a gouge with thinner sides.
- Adjusting for Winter Climates: Humidity dictates how cane behaves. In dry winter climates, building more strength into the reed by utilizing a gouge with slightly heavier sides helps the tip maintain a proper opening and keeps the cane vibrating freely in dry air.
What is the Ideal Oboe Gouge Thickness?
